Directive modernisation moves forward

European Parliament and Council reach agreement

The process of modernising Directive 2005/36/EC is another step closer to its completion, with the European Parliament and Council having reached an agreement on the draft text on 12 June 2013. The rapporteur Bernadette Vergnaud (S&D, FR) commented that the text delivers “many concrete improvements for citizens” including “the introduction of a European professional card” as well as other tools which will help the mobility of qualified professionals throughout Europe.

Now that an agreement has been reached, the Council Committee of Permanent Representatives and the Internal Market Committee will need to formally approve the text.  It is expected that the committee will vote before the summer break, with a plenary vote anticipated in October.

You can read Commissioner Barnier’s statement and the press release on the agreement on the Commission website.
