The Early Years Service is for people who want to work in an Early Years setting in England. The rules and requirements for this are set by the UK Department for Education (DfE). If the individual does not want to work in the Early Years sector with children from 0-5, for example if they are a primary school teacher, then they do not need the Early Years Service. Our standard Statement of Comparability service will give the qualification comparisons relevant to their needs.

Please note this service is only applicable to England. If an individual wants to work in an Early Years setting in Scotland or Wales or Northern Ireland, then visit our Early Years information page about what they need to do.

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) means having the right to teach in England. QTS is awarded by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA).

If your client or applicant has QTS, they do NOT need the Early Years Service. Their QTS allows them to work in Early Years settings. They should present evidence of their QTS directly to the potential employer.

Qualified teachers from some countries can achieve QTS because of their professional status in their country of origin. Registered teachers from EU and EEA Member States, Switzerland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA may be eligible for QTS without further training.

If an individual is a registered teacher eligible for QTS but does not yet have it, they do NOT need the Early Years Service. Further information on how to apply for QTS is available online.

If an individual does not have QTS, and is not eligible for QTS, they need to use the UK NARIC Early Years Service.

The Early Years Service finds out if an individual is qualified to work as a Level 3 Early Years Educator or a Level 2 Childcare Worker in Early Years Settings in England.

The service does a detailed mapping of the content of an individual’s qualifications to the official DfE criteria.

The Level (2 or 3) determines the type of job an individual can do and how they fit into the rules on staff:child ratios.

These rules and ratios set out the number of children an individual is allowed to supervise. This is determined by the age of the children, the other staff within the setting and their Level, and the type of setting the individual will be working in.

Please note it is up to you whether you would like the individual’s qualification to be mapped against Level 2 or Level 3. Please see the details below for more information.

Level 2 Early Years Practitioner

UK NARIC will map the content of a qualification against the DfE's .

The evaluation statement will provide guidance on next steps in order to work as a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner in England.

The details of the next steps guidance will depend on whether the individual has rights under European Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications.

The next steps guidance will set out options available, so that an individual can demonstrate competence in any of the criteria that are not covered by their qualification(s).

Level 3 Early Years Educator

UK NARIC will map the content of your qualification against the DfE's Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications criteria.

We also provide a comparison for a school qualification to help demonstrate that an individual meets the DfE's literacy and numeracy requirements. The literacy and numeracy requirement for working at Level 3 is set by the DfE.

The evaluation statement gives guidance on your next steps in order to work as a Level 3 Early Years Educator in England.

The details of the next steps guidance will depend on whether an individual has rights under European Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications.

The next steps guidance will set out options available to you, so that you can demonstrate competence in any of the criteria that are not covered by your qualification(s).

You can view an example of an Early Years Service evaluation statement for Level 3 Early Years Educators online

For your early years qualification(s), a photo or scan of your final certificate; also, a photo or scan of the final transcript or Diploma Supplement in the original language.

A photo or scan of official evidence of the age range covered by the content of your qualification. We cannot accept letters or documents that make unsupported statements about the age range that you are qualified to work with. The evidence must confirm the age range covered by the actual content of your course. To view some examples of accepted letters please click here and here.

A photo or scan of a detailed description of your course content*. To view an example of course content please click here. This document is reproduced with the express consent of the copyright holder, training.gov.au (TGA) as an example of an acceptable course content that might be used to support the application.

If you are applying for Level 3: For your school qualifications, a photo or scan of your final certificate; also, a photo or scan of your final transcript in the original language.

A photo or scan of a certified English translation(s) of any of your documents not in English. If you need a certified translation, contact your local translation agencies or your Embassy.

*Only modules that you have passed will be looked at as part of the mapping process. Course modules that you have not done and that do not appear in your transcripts will not be mapped. The course content information you give us must be the information relevant to your year(s) of study; eg if you studied a module in academic year 2002-2003 then you must provide the module descriptor or course handbook from that academic year 2002-2003.

The English Language Assessment is for individuals who need to demonstrate their English language ability for the purposes of work, study, or registration with a professional body.
