Recognition of Bologna Master’s Degrees in Europe

With the educational reform planned or in progress across Europe as part of the Bologna Process, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the then newly-introduced Master’s degrees in Germany, Italy and Spain.

To do so, the study involved in-depth analysis of the nature, entry requirements, content, structure and associated outcomes against UK provision. Desk-based research combined with extensive liaison with ENIC-NARIC offices and in-country visits revealed that second cycle awards in each country could be considered comparable, offering an important counter-argument to concerns of stakeholders in each system about the differing duration of Master’s degrees across Europe. As such, the study represents an important contribution to the progression of the Bologna reforms and the recognition of Bologna degrees.
