Services for Individuals

Construction workers and CSCS cards

This information is for workers in the construction industry who require a specialised UK NARIC Statement of Comparability for Construction Skills in order to apply for a CSCS card to work on a construction site:

  • as an Academically Qualified Person, eg if you have an HNC, HND, degree or higher, or
  • as a skilled building trades worker, crafts person, supervisor or manager eg if you have done an apprenticeship or specific training for your job. The minimum requirement for skilled occupations is NVQ Level 2 or an approved equivalent.

If your academic qualifications in construction are below HNC level and you studied them in college, rather than having on-site training and assessment as part of your work, this service may not be appropriate for you. You could look at our standard UK NARIC Statement of Comparability.

If you work in the construction industry but do not need a CSCS card, and require a standard UK NARIC Statement of Comparability for employment, training, study, or visa purposes, please click here.

If you are an organisation or employer requiring a qualification comparison to issue a CSCS card, you may wish to use our One-off Enquiry service, or our corporate bundle services. If you are an existing corporate customer and need information or advice, you should contact your sales@naric.org.uk.

If you have questions about applying for CSCS cards, please contact CSCS.

This page covers:

Which CSCS card?

There is a wide range of CSCS cards to cover the different trades in construction. Before applying, check which card you need for the work you intend to do. Use the card finder tool on the CSCS website to identify the correct card for your occupation. Simply enter your occupation into the card finder and follow the steps on-screen. Alternatively, your employer or recruitment agency can also tell you which card is the correct one for you.

Please tell us which CSCS card you need when you apply to UK NARIC for a Statement of Comparability for Construction Skills.

Academically Qualified Person (AQP)

If you have a construction qualification that is equivalent to UK HNC, HND, degree or above, you can apply for an AQP CSCS card. If your qualification is at an appropriate level, and you are applying for an AQP card, you will not need skills mapping on your Statement of Comparability for Construction Skills.

Due to fraudulent applications in the past, CSCS now needs all qualifications to have Primary Source Verification via UK NARIC. To verify a qualification, UK NARIC or its verification partners will check directly with the institution that awarded the qualification, to prove it is genuine.

This service takes 30 days to complete and, due to the PSV check, Fast Track is not available. The service costs £184.50 + VAT* (£221.40).

You can add the Translation Waiver Service to the Statement of Comparability for Construction Skills. This saves you the need for a translation. This is not a free service: it is an upgrade which costs £30.00 + VAT* (£36.00).

Skilled worker, advanced crafts worker, supervisor or manager

If you have construction industry training certificates relating to your work, or you served an apprenticeship, you may need a Statement of Comparability of Construction Skills with Skills Mapping and Primary Source Verification to apply for a CSCS card.

A CSCS card provides proof that a construction worker has the appropriate training and qualifications to do a specific job on site safely and correctly. Because the content of training courses is not fixed, CSCS needs to know exactly what your skills are to decide if you can have a specific CSCS card.

To achieve this, CSCS has introduced a requirement that overseas construction workers wishing to work in the UK will have the technical content of their overseas qualification mapped against the relevant UK National Occupational Standard for that occupation. This detailed mapping must be verified by the Construction Industry Training Board.

This process is quite complex, and this is reflected in a price that is higher than other UK NARIC statement services. Not all qualifications are suitable for detailed skills mapping. Therefore, there is a 2-stage process. Stage 1 is a low-cost initial checking stage. We will advise whether your qualification is suitable for Stage 2 and full, detailed skills mapping.

This 2-stage approach means that individuals with qualifications that are not suitable are saved the expense and time of going through the full mapping process.

Stage 1 – start your application online. Register and choose Statement of Comparability of Construction Skills, then use the menu to choose the type of CSCS card you want to apply for.

There is a drop-down list to choose your job, or which specific CSCS card you will be applying for. You can then download a form to tell us about the training you have done that is relevant to this CSCS card. This form needs to be signed by the organisation or institution that provided your training.

Scan in and send us the signed form plus copies of your qualification certificates and documents and certified translations into English of these documents. UK NARIC will then look at your qualifications and tell you if your application can proceed to Stage 2 for detailed skills mapping. Stage 1 costs £50.00 + VAT* (£60.00). This is not refundable.

Stage 2 – We will send you a message to let you know if your qualifications are appropriate to apply for the CSCS card you want. If they are, we will send you a skills mapping form to be filled in by the organisation or institution that provided your training. We will also need your permission to conduct Primary Source Verification (PSV), which is required by CSCS for all applications to prove qualifications are genuine.

Stage 2 costs £345.00 + VAT* (£414.00). We will not take payment until we have all your documents. This service takes 30 days from the day we process your payment and, due to the PSV check, Fast Track is not available.

Postage costs are extra; please see Delivery Options.

How to apply

The easiest way to apply is through our online system. It is designed to guide you through the process of applying for a Statement of Comparability for Construction Skills, with or without skills mapping. Use the menus to make sure you are applying for the right service for your work and qualifications, and to send us the right information as you upload your scanned documents to our user portal.

You can then track your application online and message us if you need to. Alternatively, if you have limited access to the internet or cannot upload documents, you can apply by post, and send us photocopies of your documents. This process is explained here.

To apply online:

  • Register a new account through the UK NARIC user portal.
  • You will get an email with a link to click on to activate your account.
  • Log in to your account using your email address and password.
  • Start your application: choose the Statement of Comparability for Construction Skills service; follow the instructions on the user portal.
  • It’s easy to start over or go back a step if you are not sure which choice is correct. The menus will guide you to choose the right statement for your work.

You can message us through the UK NARIC User Portal. We respond to messages within 5 working days (though we try to be faster).

We cannot process your application until we receive the correct payment and all your required documents, either uploaded to the UK NARIC user portal, or by post, email or fax to our office.

Go to the online application system

A Statement of Comparability for Construction Skills with a Primary Source Verification, with or without Skills Mapping from UK NARIC does not give you the right to a CSCS card, and does not guarantee that you will be accepted for a card. The final decision on who is accepted for CSCS cards rests with CSCS.

Primary Source Verification (PSV) – checks for genuine documents

CSCS has recently received a large number of applications for CSCS cards using fraudulent or false documents. To prove a qualification is genuine, UK NARIC or its verification partners will check directly with the institution that awarded it.

When you complete your application, you will need to send us a scan of the photo ID page of your passport, as proof of your identity. You will also need to download, sign, scan and return a Letter of Authorisation to give us permission to share your information with our verification partners. Return your signed letter via the user portal, post, fax or email.

How long will it take?

Once we receive all your documents and your payment, we aim to have your Statement ready within 30 working days**. However, occasionally we need more information from you. If this happens, we will contact you as soon as possible, and let you know if your application will therefore take longer.

If you want to know how your application is progressing, you can track it on the user portal.

What will I receive?

You will receive two documents in one envelope: your UK NARIC Statement of Comparability for Construction Skills and your Primary Source Verification Report. This is a document that gives information about the checks that have been made on your qualifications, and whether or not they have been proved to be genuine.
You should keep both of these documents securely, as they are valuable. You will need both of them to apply for a CSCS card. They will also be useful for job applications, along with your original certificates and translations of your certificates.

Important dates

The UK NARIC Statement of Comparability for Construction Skills with Skills Mapping and Primary Source Verification of qualification is available from 1 December 2017.

If you already have a UK NARIC Statement of Comparability dated before 29 September 2017, you can use it to apply for a CSCS card until 31 December 2017 without an additional verification report.

If you have an unmapped Statement of Comparability for Construction Skills with a PSV report and you wish to apply for a CSCS card for Skilled Worker, Advanced Craft, Supervisory or Manager, CSCS will only accept this for applications until 31 December 2017. From 1 January 2018, you will need a statement with Skills Mapping.
